We made apple pie!

Today as a culmination to our unit of inquiry focused on journeys, we read the book How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman.

The premise of this book is that a woman wants to make an apple pie, so she takes a short journey to the market to purchase all the materials...only to realize that the market is closed! She then has to journey around the world to gather all the ingredients. As our class pointed out, this was quite a long physical journey!

We used the recipe in the back of the book to make our own apple pie!

We found our pie very delicious, and we are eager to share our cooking skills at home, so ask us to help out!

Track & Field Day

We had so much fun last week during our Track & Field meet! Click on the link below to view photos of the day.

Choir Concert

The KG - G2 music concert is fast approaching, and we can't wait to sing to you! Please don't forget to join us in the large amphitheater on Wednesday, December 14th at 8:15 am. Each child needs to be dressed in a white top and black bottoms (shorts, pants, or skirt). If you have one at home,  your child may wear a Santa hat or reindeer antlers -- or red and green decoration.

Track & Field Meet

Reminder that our Track & Field meet is fast approaching -- this coming Thursday morning! Please see the flyer below for more details, and view the post from last week about which color t-shirt your child should come dressed in that morning.

Popcorn Senses Experiment

We had a special visitor come to our classroom last week to help us revisit our senses. Sydnie from Grade 3 prepared a special experiment for us.

She made 7 different types of popcorn (plain, salty, spicy, lemony, sweet, cheesy, and one with cinnamon & sugar).

Sydnie encouraged us to be courageous and try each of the popcorns. We used our senses to make hypotheses about what kind of popcorn each one was. We then wrote down our thoughts on sticky notes.

We realized that three senses really helped us in predicting what each one was: taste, sight and smell. Chloe explained it well when she said, "I think the brownish one is brown sugar because my sense of sight shows me it is brown and my sense of taste tells me it is sweet". We decided that if she used her sense of smell she may have been able to tell that it also contained cinnamon!

We are grateful to our friend Sydnie for taking the time to come into our classroom and teach us about our senses. Following her visit there were many comments of, "I want to make some popcorn at home!"
Ask your child what his/her favorite kind of popcorn was!

Life Journey

Last week we had the opportunity to examine our life journey a bit closer as we observed children ages 7 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years and 4 years old. We noted differences and similarities in their heights, movements and verbal skills.

As we observed the children, we recorded our thoughts and findings. We then measured each of their heights - which ties into our math unit on measurement.

We realized that children change quite a lot in their life journey between ages zero and five!
